Highlights of the 2016-17 School Year:
Congratulations on an outstanding year. It's was a great year to be a band member in E-Hawk Country! On Monday, January 23rd, the High School Jazz Band participated in the IHSMA State Contest held at Spirit Lake High School. The band performed for three judges and received a II (Excellent) rating in their return to this festival. After their performance, they received immediate feedback in a clinic given to them by Paul Bloomquist of Iowa Central Community College. Congrats to this band on all of their growth this season! Go E-Hawks!
The fall has been a busy time for the band students in Emmetsburg! After the conclusion of marching band, students went right into concert band, and HS early morning jazz rehearsals began. Here are five highlights from the past few weeks: 1. NCIBA 7/8 Honor Band Three students represented Emmetsburg at NCIBA Honor Band held in Mason City on Saturday, November 12th. They were selected from a pool of hundreds of nominations by other area teachers. In preparation for this event, they had to learn six major scales, practice an etude, and work up the ensemble music being performed. 2. Go Cyclones!
On October 20th, the HS Concert Band was fortunate enough to be visited by Dr. Steven Smyth, Associate Director of Bands at Iowa State University. He did an excellent job working with the students and helping them to gain active listening skills. 3. High School Jazz Band High School Jazz Band began rehearsing before school. The students in this ensemble were fortunate enough to work with area master teachers who have quality experience and years of succesful jazz teaching. This ensemble performed at NCIBA District Contest in Fort Dodge on December 3rd, received 5th place in Class 2A, and four outstanding soloist awards! 4. 7/8 Holiday Concert The 7/8 Band recently held their Holiday Concert on December 5th. Selections included, "African Bell Carol", "Satin Doll", "Ancient Carol", and "Holiday Grand Finale". This concert was held in conjunction with the 7/8 trebel and bass choirs. It was a very fun concert! 5. HS Holiday Concert The HS Holiday Concert will be held on December 19th at 7:30pm. This will be in conjunction with the HS Choirs. Selections for this will include "Sleigh Ride", "Away in a Manger", "Greensleeves", and "And All the Bells Shall Ring!". Please make plans to attend this concert! Last week, Emmetsburg celebrated Homecoming. Band students were actively involved, and were kept busy all week. A new event for junior and senior band students was attending the Friday morning pep rallies held at Emmetsburg Catholic School and West elementary. These students performed the School Song and a pep band tune for these kids, and were able to visit with the students at West Elementary. It was a fun morning for all! Friday afternoon all 7-12 Band students were involved with the annual Homecoming parade and community pep rally. There were 72 students marching in this parade and they represented the Emmetsburg Schools very well!

The show features the selections, "I Want You Back", "Respect", and "Ain't No Mountain High Enough." The 27 students in HS band have been working hard outside everyday learning new sets of drill. The E-Hawk Marching Band is under the command of Drum Major Jacklyn Radvansky.
